Is Irodov Worth It for JEE Advanced?

By JEEcompass (IIT Bombay, JEE Advanced AIR 764)

Part of Best JEE Books by Subject: Maths, Physics and Chemistry for a Top 1000 Advanced Rank.

Irodov has a reputation. Students either treat it as a holy book or a trap. Both attitudes cost time.

This post is part of the JEE books hub. I used selected Irodov questions in my physics prep. Here is what that means in practice.

Short answer

  • Irodov is a stretch book. Use it after your core problem book, not before.
  • Do selected questions only. I did not finish the book.
  • It sits at the top of the physics ladder after HC Verma and Cengage, as in our physics list.
  • Skip it if your basics are shaky. Fix those first.
  • Do not confuse it with Pathfinder, which I found not useful for my purpose.

Where Irodov fits

My path in the HC Verma video: HC Verma for theory and feel, then Cengage and Ashish Arora’s Advanced Illustrations, then selected Irodov. I scored 90+ out of 120 in physics in 2023. The claim I made there is that tough Cengage questions plus selected Irodov can get you to about 90 to 100.

That is an estimate from my own experience. It is not a guarantee.

One related note from another video: concept building by analysing questions after lectures, in the style of Irodov and HC Verma, was part of how I studied.

How to use it without wasting months

I do not have a recorded chapter-by-chapter method for Irodov, so here is a practical approach consistent with how I use any big question bank.

  1. Finish a chapter in your core book first. See how to use Cengage.
  2. Pick a small set of Irodov questions from that chapter. Quality over count.
  3. Time-box each question. If you are stuck, read the idea, close it, and retry later.
  4. Log what failed in a mistake log. Note whether the problem was concept, setup or calculation.
  5. Come back a week later and redo the failed ones.

When to skip Irodov

Situation Better move
Struggling with Cengage-level questions Stay on Cengage
Mains is your main goal PYQs and HC Verma
Less than a few months left PYQs and revision
Already scoring well in physics tests Selected Irodov is fine

What Irodov trains

It trains setup and reasoning under unfamiliar conditions. That is the same muscle Advanced tests. It also exposes silly algebra slips, which is why pairing it with work on silly mistakes helps. For truly hard Advanced problems, read how to approach the toughest questions.

Do not forget previous-year questions. They tell you what the paper really asks, which Irodov alone cannot.

What about Pathfinder?

I tried Pathfinder for only two or three questions and called it a waste of time. It has IPhO-level questions and beyond. For most JEE students, I would not recommend it.

A sample week with selected Irodov

This is a suggestion, not a sourced routine.

  • Early week: finish the core book questions for the chapter and attempt PYQs of that chapter.
  • Midweek: choose a small set of Irodov questions on the same chapter. Attempt each with a fixed time cap.
  • End of week: review the ones you failed, read the solution idea, and redo them from scratch without looking.
  • Next week: revisit the failed ones once more before starting a new chapter.

The goal is not to finish Irodov. The goal is to lift your ceiling on problems where the setup is unfamiliar.

How to read an Irodov solution

When you fail a question, resist reading the whole solution. Read the first line or the key idea, close it, and try again. If you still cannot proceed, read a little more. This preserves the thinking work, which is where the learning is. After solving, write one sentence on what trick or principle unlocked it. Those sentences become your revision notes.

Signs you are overdoing it

If you spend more than a day on a single question, if your core-book accuracy is dropping, or if you are skipping PYQs to do more Irodov, you are overdoing it. Step back to the core book and tests.

Questions to ask before opening Irodov

  • Can I solve most Cengage-level questions in a chapter without hints?
  • Have I done the Advanced PYQs of this chapter?
  • Do I have time to review failures, not just attempt problems?

If the answer to any of these is no, Irodov can wait. A stretch book is only useful once the ground under it is solid.

How to record what you learn

After each Irodov session, write two lines: the principle that mattered, and the mistake you nearly made. Over a few weeks these lines become a compact list of traps. Read that list before physics tests. It is more useful than the solutions themselves, because it is specific to the way you think.

FAQ

Is Irodov necessary for a top rank? Not necessarily. It helped me as a stretch, selectively.

Can a beginner start with Irodov? No. Start with theory and core problems.

How many Irodov questions should I do? I cannot give a sourced number. Pick a small set per chapter.

Irodov or Cengage? Cengage first. Irodov is after.

Does Irodov help in Mains? Mostly not directly. It is an Advanced stretch.
