Unacademy and PW for JEE: Honest Review and How to Use Them
Part of FIITJEE vs ALLEN vs Aakash: How to Choose and Use Coaching for JEE.
Online platforms have made good teachers available to anyone with a phone. They have also made it easy to feel productive while learning very little. If you are studying through Unacademy or PW Online, the platform will not decide your result. The way you use it will.
This post covers what I said in my platform reviews: what each does well, where it falls short, and the exact habits I would follow. It belongs to our coaching hub on FIITJEE, ALLEN and Aakash, where I also compare offline options.
Short answer
- Unacademy: strong teachers and flexibility, weaker as a test benchmark. Pick one teacher and stay with him.
- PW Online: teachers are usually good. Watch on time, make notes in your own words, and do questions after every few lectures.
- Both can stop at Mains level. Test yourself with reference-book questions and hard Advanced PYQs.
- For all-India ranking, use a stronger test series if the platform’s tests feel easy.
Unacademy: where it is strong
The biggest strength is teacher quality. Unacademy pays star teachers and heads of department to join, so you can pick from some of the best teaching around. It also lets you choose a teacher rather than being assigned one, and recorded lectures give flexibility. Olympiad content is available, and advanced teachers may finish the syllabus only after Mains attempt 1, so the pace can differ from a normal batch.
How to judge a teacher
Disclaimer first: the answer depends on the batch and teacher you choose. To pick:
- Watch a lecture.
- Ask: does it click, is it too easy, or too advanced?
- Test the teacher’s level against PYQs.
Pick one and stay
There are too many options. I used a food analogy: when the menu is huge, you keep sampling and never finish a meal. Choose one teacher and trust him for about two years. Once you have picked, do not keep going back to change. The line I used was roughly: you will not clear JEE Advanced by studying in small pieces from many places.
Where it is weaker
For all-India test benchmarking, I found the platform’s tests weak. I preferred Allen or FIITJEE AITS. Study material is also teacher-specific, there is no universal package, so follow the reference books your chosen teacher recommends.
Teachers I recommended
These are names as they appeared in my video, so spellings may differ from official names:
| Subject | Teachers mentioned |
|---|---|
| Physics | Nitin Sachan, Amit Gupta |
| Inorganic and Physical Chemistry | Vishal Joshi, Akhilesh (AK) sir |
| Organic Chemistry | Surendra Kumar Mishra (SKM), MK sir |
| Maths | Alok Kumar (very high level, not for everyone) |
These recommendations came from IIT Bombay students at the time of recording. Teachers move between platforms, so verify who is teaching which batch before you enrol.
PW Online: how to actually crack Advanced
My advice for PW students was a clear loop:
- Watch lectures on time. No pile-up, with full attention.
- Make notes in your own words. If the teacher writes a sentence on the board and you copy it, that is not note-making.
- After two or three lectures, solve questions. Use PW DPPs or, better, PYQs.
- If solved examples are not enough, use another reference book before PYQs.
- Finish the module’s Advanced section at the end. It is not very tough.
- Revise four or five days, or a week, later with Advanced questions from reference books. Use books for questions, not theory.
- Attempt every test, chapter-wise and full. Then analyse.
- Keep a mistake booklet, for example screenshots of wrong questions saved in a separate Google Photos account, and revisit it often.
If PW tests feel easy, use another series. I run my own mentorship test series too, but any harder series works. Learn more about building that habit in our coaching vs self-study post.
Test analysis is the biggest lesson
I said that test analysis is the biggest lesson you will learn in JEE prep. Fear of results is avoiding accountability. Similar-pattern questions recur, sometimes even on exam day, so your own mistakes are the best syllabus.
The common trap: Mains-level lectures
The risk with popular online lectures is that they stop at Mains level. You can finish a full batch and still be unprepared for Advanced. The fix is not to leave the platform. It is to add a layer: reference-book questions and hard Advanced PYQs. Compare how the FIITJEE module does this at a higher level in the FIITJEE module review.
What a good week looks like on an online platform
Put the advice together and a week has a rhythm. Lectures are watched on the day they are released, not stacked up. Notes are written in your own words. After every two or three lectures, a block of DPPs or PYQs follows. At the end of the week, one or two days go to reference-book questions on the chapters you finished four or five days earlier. Tests are attempted as scheduled, and the mistake booklet is updated the same evening.
If any part slips for more than a few days, fix that before adding anything new. A backlog of recorded lectures is the quiet danger of online study, because nothing forces you to catch up.
Online platforms and other plans
If you cannot afford or attend offline coaching, an online batch plus a clear method works. If you want to skip lectures entirely, see the no-coaching roadmap. If you also attend school, read managing school and coaching so the two do not clash.
Online vs offline in one view
Online gives you choice, rewatching and no commute, but needs extra discipline, and you can waste time just watching lectures. Offline gives environment and discipline. Neither wins automatically. Use the internet for learning, not as a distraction.
FAQ
Is Unacademy good for JEE Advanced? Teachers are strong and flexible, but tests are weak for all-India ranking. Pair it with a stronger series.
Is PW enough for JEE Advanced? Its teachers are usually good, but you must add PYQs, reference-book questions and tests, and finish the Advanced section.
Should I switch teachers if I do not like one? Judge a teacher before you commit, using a lecture and PYQs. After that, avoid switching again and again.
What should I do after each lecture? Make notes in your own words, then solve questions after two or three lectures.
How do I use a mistake booklet? Save screenshots of wrong questions in a separate folder or account and revisit them periodically.
