Where to Practice Organic Chemistry for JEE (Books and Method)

By JEEcompass (IIT Bombay, JEE Advanced AIR 764)

Part of Best JEE Books by Subject: Maths, Physics and Chemistry for a Top 1000 Advanced Rank.

Organic chemistry has plenty of theory sources and very few good practice sources. Students read a lot, then freeze on a new mechanism in the exam.

I used M.S. Chouhan’s Advanced Problems in Organic Chemistry and I recommend it, with caveats. This post is part of our JEE books hub.

Short answer

  • Learn concepts first, from NCERT, coaching or lectures. Practice books do not teach.
  • Practise from M.S. Chouhan. Level 1, then Level 2.
  • Skip the author’s separate “basic problems” book. Learn concepts, then buy the advanced one.
  • Add PYQs to see how the exam actually frames questions.
  • Circle out-of-syllabus questions and move on.

Step 1: Foundation

Before any practice book, you need NCERT organic: reactions, reactants, catalysts, conditions, named reactions, common names, and mechanisms with every step and the rate-determining step. Conditions such as temperature and pressure are worth memorising only when the NCERT reaction states them. See the chemistry overview and the organic chemistry strategy.

Step 2: M.S. Chouhan

From my review of the book:

Part What it gives you
Level 1 Many problems. Some are easy right after a lecture, others test concepts
Level 2 Harder problems with unique mechanisms you must reason out. Covers Advanced patterns such as multiple correct and matrix match

Level 2 especially built my confidence for any Advanced problem.

The downsides

  • The solution book gives answers, not detailed explanations.
  • A few topics are out of syllabus.

I also made the point that thin solutions might be a strength. It forces you to build concepts instead of copying steps. It depends on whether you turn it into a weakness or a strength.

How to work through it

  1. Finish a theory chapter first.
  2. Attempt Level 1 questions for that chapter.
  3. When stuck, go back to the mechanism, not the answer.
  4. Move to Level 2 once Level 1 feels comfortable.
  5. Keep a small sheet of exceptions and mechanisms. I made seven or eight sheets and pasted them near my desk.

Add PYQs

Use previous-year questions to see the real question style. Method in how to solve JEE PYQs. I did not cover a specific PYQ book for organic in my notes, so choose whichever compiled set your coaching recommends.

Who should use this book

It is useful after you have a decent concept base, and more for Advanced than for Mains. If you are only aiming at Mains, NCERT plus PYQs may be enough.

Other chemistry branches

Practice sources for the other branches are separate. For physical, see the physical chemistry book guide. For inorganic, see NCERT for inorganic.

FAQ

Is M.S. Chouhan good for JEE Advanced? I recommend it for mechanism practice and Advanced patterns, after concepts are clear.

Do I need his basic problems book? I would skip it and learn concepts from other sources.

What if I cannot solve the questions? Go back to the mechanism and the concept. Do not just read answers.

Is it needed for Mains? Less so. It is aimed at Advanced.

Are Cengage organic questions useful? I advise against Cengage for organic. See the books overview.
